Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927) is one of Japan's foremost stylists - a modernist master whose short stories are marked by highly original imagery, cynicism, beauty, and wild humour. "Rashomon" and "In a Bamboo Grove" inspired Kurosawa's magnificent film and depict a past in which morality is turned upside down, while tales such as "The Nose", "O-Gin", and "Loyalty" paint a rich and imaginative picture of a medieval Japan peopled by Shoguns and priests, vagrants, and peasants. And in later works such as "Death Register", "The Life of a Stupid Man", and "Spinning Gears", Akutagawa drew from his own life to devastating effect, revealing his intense melancholy and terror of madness in exquisitely moving impressionistic stories.

Akutagawa Ryunosuke, short-story writer, poet, and essayist, one of the first Japanese modernists translated into English. He was born in Tokyo in 1892, and began writing for student publications at the age of ten. He graduated from Tokyo University in 1916 with an English Literature degree and worked as a teacher before becoming a full time writer in 1919. His mother had gone mad suddenly just months after his birth and he was plagued by fear of inherited insanity all his life. He killed himself in 1927.Haruki Murakami (Introducer) has written eleven novels, eight volumes of short stories and numerous works of non-fiction, as well as translating much American literature into Japanese. His most famous novels are Norwegian Wood, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, and Kafka on the Shore.Jay Rubin (Translator) has translated several of Murakami's works into English and is also the author of Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words. He has been professor of Japanese Literature at the Universities of Washington and Harvard.

Let's get the cliché out first: Most everybody interested in this collection will know the title story by name as it is the framing device of Kurosawa's film of the same title. The bulk of that film's plot, OTOH, is from another story [In a grove], also contained in this very well selected collection.Jay Rubin is a well-known translator of Japanese, for good reason. He hits a well-balanced style relaying the original's intricacies where possible without sacrificing readability - remember that translation is probably more about the target language than the source. Sure, one should understand the culture of the source to get as many connotation as possible. In the end one wishes readers of the target language to learn by way of entertainment they get from the translation. Rubin bolsters understanding with erudite notes and short introductions for the period pieces.The Kindle edition I own is well typeset and formatted, its only downside being the introductions to the stories, which hide just before the notes for the same piece. Unfortunately the introductions do not have their own links.All in all a well thought out, entertaining story collection and introduction to the work and world of Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Highly recommended.

Die Taisho Demokratie hat das Denken und Fühlen vieler Menschen stark beeinflusst, genau wie Erfahrungen mit moderner Kriegsführung.In diesem Buch sind die ausgewählten Geschichten etwa in dem Muster aufgeführt, wie sie ein durchschnittlicher gebildeter Japan im Laufe seines Lebens kennen lernt, und die letzten Geschichten, die sehr starke autobiographische Bezüge haben, sind sicherlich eher Reflektionen von Akutgawas Depressionen als von seiner Umgebung. Sein späterer Selbstmord zeichnet sich hier in überaus verstörender Art und Weise bereits ab. Sicherlich nicht jedermanns Idee von guter Unterhaltung.Aber die anderen Geschichten, die die japanische Literatur und auch das japanische Kino sehr stark beeinflusst haben und dies auch immer noch tun sind durchaus lesenwert und sind in der Lage, den Leserinnen und Lesern bestimmte Aspekte der modernen japanischen Kultur zu erschließen.
Akutagawa's stories create a lively picture of Japan at the turn of the century until the end of the liberal TaishÅ period, whose finish is said to be marked by Akutagawa's suicide in 1927. The book features stories set in the era of the Samurai or originating from the Japanese mythologie as well as modern "tragicomical" tales and the story of Akutagawa's own life, indicating his perception of youth, family life and his declining state of mental health. Numerous explanations and annotations help to bring the text closer to the reader. Although some of his more significant works are missing ("Kappa", "Yam Gruel"), the book presents what might be the core of Akutagawa's literally creation.
